Since she was first elected to Congress, Marsha Blackburn has been calling for fiscal responsibility and reductions in federal government spending. She understands that the federal government must balance its budget and live within its means.
Each year, Congressman Blackburn has sponsored three bills that require across the board spending cuts in the Federal budget. She is a strong advocate for keeping taxes low. Blackburn, along with many Republicans, recognizes that Washington does not have a revenue problem - it has a spending problem.
As a member of the fiscally responsible Republican Study Committee (RSC), Congressman Blackburn introduced the American Taxpayer Bill of Rights, a new initiative to protect the American taxpayer. This was the kickoff to a massive grassroots effort to revamp how the federal government handles taxpayer dollars. She believes in a fiscally responsible federal government that protects the social security trust fund, holds the line on taxes, and produces a simple, understandable and fair tax code.
The National Taxpayers Union has bestowed the title of "Friend of the Taxpayer" upon Blackburn three times and recently named her the 7th best legislator on tax issues for the 109th Congress.
Marsha also voted, “NO” on increasing our nation’s debt ceiling because she firmly believes that any increase in the limit without serious constraints on spending is as irresponsible as allowing a default; Possibly, more so. The Obama Administration’s big government model of “tax, spend, and let our kids worry about paying for it” must be stopped.
Congressman Blackburn will only vote to increase the debt limit if it is preceded by tough measures to end the model of tax and spend government. That means a spending cap of at most 20% of GDP, cuts in real spending equal to or greater than the amount of any increase, and a balanced budget amendment.
