BLACKBURN LEADS CHARGE AGAINST HIGH GAS PRICES

Washington, May 21 -

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) stood with her Republican colleagues today as they proposed real action to immediately reduce the staggering price of gasoline. On a day when gas prices across Tennessee’s 7th district reached historic highs, Blackburn set forth a series of solutions that could bring that price down. Congressman Blackburn explained the Republican plan for lower gas prices on C-Span’s Washington Journal this morning before joining her colleagues for a Capitol Hill Press Conference.

“Tennesseans are ahead of Congress where gas prices are concerned. They know that to get the price at the pump down, Congress must clear the roadblocks to increased domestic supply. It costs a mom about $86 more a month to fill the mini-van than it did in January 2007 when Democrats took Congress. That mom is tired of her family budget being used as a laboratory for Democrat and environmentalists’ pet policies. As we begin the Memorial Day travel week, I am calling on Democrats to embrace these common sense solutions and give Tennesseans a needed break.”

Republican Plan For Lower Gas Prices:

For more, see www.gop.gov

  • Immediately suspend the 18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Offset the cost to the Highway Trust Fund with a corresponding one-year freeze on all taxpayer funded earmarks. This will ensure that the American people get a break at the pump while the states are not burdened with another unfunded mandate.

  • Increase the production of American-made energy in an environmentally safe way. This includes exploration of next generation oil, natural gas, coal, and the production of advanced alternative fuels like clean coal-to-liquids.
  • Promote new, clean, and reliable sources of energy like advanced nuclear and next generation coal.
  • Cut red tape and increase the supply of American-made fuel and energy. Eliminate the road-blocks to new construction of new oil refineries and bureaucratic regulations mandating the use of exotic fuels have decreased supply and increased the cost of gas.
  • Encourage greater energy efficiency by offering conservation tax incentives to Americans who make their home, car, and business more energy efficient.
